The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced it will suspend mail delivery and retail services on Thursday, January 9, in observance of the national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter. In a statement, the USPS said that while regular mail delivery and retail services will be suspended, limited package delivery service will still be provided on that day. Normal operations, including retail, delivery, and collection schedules, will resume on Friday, January 10, 2025.
For those needing postal products and services during the suspension, stamps and other essentials are available at most grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores. Many services such as tracking packages, buying stamps, holding mail, printing postage online, submitting a change of address, scheduling a package pickup, and finding USPS locations, including self-service kiosks, can be accessed 24/7 at www.usps.com. As part of their announcement, USPS also promoted their Informed Delivery service, which provides an email preview of mail and packages coming soon to customers’ mailboxes.
The national day of mourning on January 9 reflects the country’s respect and remembrance for the contributions and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter. Former President Jimmy Carter will be honored with a state funeral on Thursday, January 9.
Usps operations pause for carter
The 37th President of the United States passed away in late December at the age of 100. He has been lying in state in the U.S. Capitol this week. In recognition of Carter’s service to the nation, President Joe Biden has declared a National Day of Mourning for Thursday to coincide with the funeral.
A National Day of Mourning is declared by the President to honor a deceased public figure, typically a former president. It is meant to encourage reflection on the person’s life and contributions to the nation. On this day, the federal government effectively shuts down.
As part of the observance, both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also close for the day. All federal agencies will be closed, except for essential services. The last National Day of Mourning was declared in 2018 following the death of former President George H.W. Bush.
