The April 15 tax filing deadline is fast approaching. If you can’t get your taxes in order by then, you can file for an extension. This is especially useful for small business owners or self-employed individuals.
Michelle Catron, the Office Supervisor of Liberty Tax in Lynchburg, advises starting the process immediately if you’ve waited until now. “Go ahead and get that return filed; get that extension filed,” Catron said. This shows the IRS that you intend to complete your taxes, and arrangements will be made.
Delaying further would draw negative attention from the IRS, especially if deadlines are missed.
Filing deadline approaches swiftly
Filing before the deadline is also cheaper than after the deadline.
Liberty Tax offers various options including remote, drop-off, in-person walk-ins, and appointments. They are located at 2912 Memorial Avenue in Lynchburg and are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The deadline to claim your 2021 tax refunds is also April 15.
Catron pointed out that while the IRS is prompt in collecting owed taxes, they might not be as swift when it comes to issuing refunds. Around 28,500 people have unclaimed refunds from unfiled returns. Filing your taxes on time will help avoid penalties and potential issues with the IRS.
